The fourth and final novel based on the exploits of Doyle's famous detective Sherlock Holmes. This was first published in 1915. Holmes decodes a cipher warning from Moriarty's organization warning of an attepmted murder. When he arrives at the scene, a corpse is already there. Holmes deduces that the missing killer's clothes are weighted down in the moat. He searches for other evidence and finds a card for a member of the Vermissa Valley Lodge. This reminds him of a decades ago case he worked for Pinkertons, where he went for months undercover with the Freemen in Chicago and then west to a mountain coal mining town. He was attempting to capture the corrupt murderers who ran the Valley Freemen Lodge but did not prevail. How could this very old case of Holmes' help him to solve this new murder?
